Uterine fibroids are a form of benign tumor that grows in and on the uterus. Fibroids may not always create symptoms, but when they do, they can cause heavy menstrual flow, back pain, frequent urination, and pain during sex. Fibroids can form as a single nodule or as a cluster. Fibroid clusters can be as small as 1 mm in diameter or as big as 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter. In contrast, they may grow to be the size of a watermelon.
