Homeopathy was invented by Samuel Hahnemann way back in the 1700s. While Hahnemann was working as a translator, he came across a doctor’s theory about how cinchona bark worked as a treatment for malaria. At the time, cinchona bark was regularly used as a treatment for the disease, which makes sense because it contains quinine—a proven treatment for malaria. Hahnemann wondered why other items that are similar to cinchona didn’t also cure malaria, so he started experimenting on himself to try to find out. He ate a bunch of cinchona and, as we understand it today, had an allergic reaction. Back then, Hahnemann figured the bark was causing him to experience malaria-like symptoms (even though it wasn’t), which led to his defining belief: things that cause harmful symptoms in a healthy person can be used to cure a person suffering from similar symptoms. That’s it. The basis of homeopathy is a belief based on a mistake, and it has been extrapolated into a multi-billion-dollar a year industry.
